That’s kind of a letdown because in the comics Warlock is a wise and powerful cosmic being who played a key role in the saga of the Infinity Stones, but with that story already concluded in the MCU, it seems there just wasn’t much left for Warlock to do. With the way he was teased at the end of the last Guardians movie, one might think he would be the main big bad, but the High Evolutionary is very much the central antagonist and Warlock is pretty much just his lackey. Then there’s Adam Warlock, who is by far the biggest surprise in that he plays a shockingly small role.

This film has all the silly dialogue and gags you’d expect but there’s a far more dramatic tone to it, which is a welcome change after the second movie had the characters breathlessly laughing at their own jokes. Yet Gunn deftly turns that tangled ball of MCU lore threads into a devilishly fun yarn. 2 was released in 2017 the original Gamora died, a past version of Gamora survived, and Peter Quill and Mantis learned that they’re brother and sister. It’s what makes this somewhat busy but mostly lovable threequel such an emotionally rich comic book movie.Ī lot has happened with the Guardians since Vol.
#Shazam genie movie series
While the Guardians series will probably continue on in some fashion, writer-director James Gunn ties up this iteration of the team with the same humor and heart as the first two, but this time adds in unexpected darkness in the form of Rocket’s genuinely disturbing origin story.

3 offers a rare thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: a satisfying ending to a trilogy. The genie is out of the bottle.Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. Maybe that is actually Shaquille O’Neal, not Will Smith, in the new Aladdin. But good luck finding a copy of any of these movies to prove it: the offending frames have all been removed from reissues. Rumours of a hidden message in the original Aladdin saying “good teenagers take off your clothes” turned out to be untrue, but The Lion King really did feature the words “S-E-X” spelled out in dust (well, the animators claimed it said “S-F-X”) there really was a photo of a topless woman in the background of The Rescuers and we really did see that Jessica Rabbit was wearing no underwear in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Forrest Gump never says the words “life is like a box of chocolates”.ĭisney films are no stranger to this territory, either. The Amityville Horror is not based on a true story. Bogart never says “Play it again, Sam” in Casablanca. Having outsourced our pop-culture memory bank to the web, we can no longer separate myth from fact, especially when it comes to movies. You could also call it the “internet makes us all dumber effect”. This collective misremembering is known as the “ Mandela Effect” – based on the fact that many people (supposedly) believe that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s. Then, in 2017, excerpts emerged online from a “rediscovered” VHS copy of Shazaam! – with the actual Sinbad playing a genie! Unfortunately, the clip was an April Fools’ spoof, courtesy of US website CollegeHumor. Or at least the internet says he did – who knows? As a result of the Shazaam! chatter, someone Photoshopped the fake video box cover. Contributing factors include the time in 1994 when Sinbad introduced Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger on cable TV, dressed as a genie.
